Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you have an Olympia Chimney damper that’s stuck, rusted through, or letting in drafts, we stock the replacement parts and complete most repairs in a single visit. Installed damper repair or replacement for Olympia Chimney products in Austin typically runs $340 to $680, depending on the model and whether the frame needs refitting. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem in October or November, the first time they go to light a fire and the handle won’t budge, or when a cold draft has been running down the back of the couch all summer.
Here’s what matters: an Olympia damper is a throat-style damper, meaning it sits right at the top of the firebox, not at the top of the flue. When it fails, you feel it immediately. This isn’t a subtle, slow-death part. The cast iron plate seizes, the hinge pin snaps, or the cable mechanism strips. And in Austin’s humidity swings, rust is the usual culprit.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
We work on the full Olympia Chimney damper line, but the two series we see most often in Austin homes are the Olympia CH series and the Olympia LG series. The CH series damsels are chain-operated and common in masonry fireplaces built in the 1980s and 1990s. The LG series uses a lever-style worm gear, and we see those frequently in Tarrytown and Allandale homes where original fireplaces were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
The tricky part with Olympia dampers is that the mounting bolt pattern changed slightly between older and newer production runs. A 1987 CH-24 and a 2012 CH-24 are not the same part. If someone tries to sell you a “universal” damper plate without asking for the measurement between the frame bolts, walk away. For Olympia specifically, we always pull the old damper plate, measure the frame opening, and match the bolt spacing before ordering or cutting a replacement.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we’re happy to install either. Olympia still makes their current-series dampers, and for newer fireplaces, OEM is usually the cleaner fit. For older frames, a machined aftermarket plate from a Texas foundry sometimes fits better than a new OEM part, because the old frame has shifted slightly over 40 years of heating and cooling cycles. We’ll show you both options and the price difference before any work starts.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Damper Repair Is Failing
- You can’t move the handle or chain at all. This usually means the hinge pin has seized with rust or the plate has warped and is now jammed against the frame. Forcing it will snap the chain or crack the plate. That’s when you go from a $10 pin job to a full damper replacement.
- Cold air pours down the chimney in summer. A properly seated Olympia damper blocks most of that. If you can feel a steady breeze with the flue closed, the plate isn’t sealing against the frame anymore, often because the cast iron has corroded unevenly around the edges.
- The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. On LG-series lever models, the worm gear strips before the plate gives out. The handle will spin with no resistance. It’s not the plate that failed, it’s the gear mechanism inside the housing.
- You hear a loud clang when the damper drops. That’s the sign of a broken or worn hinge pin. The plate drops from open to closed in one motion. Eventually it won’t stay open at all.
- Visible rust flakes or holes in the plate. Cast iron in a firebox sees brutal conditions: heat, soot, humidity, and acidic creosote. If the plate has pinholes, flue gases and smoke will start bypassing the damper when it’s closed, which defeats the point of having one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Olympia damper repairs in the Austin area fall between $340 and $680 installed. A simple chain replacement or hinge pin repair sits at the low end. A full damper plate and frame replacement, with cutting and fitting, lands closer to $600 to $680. Where your job falls depends on whether the frame itself is still square and sound, and whether we’re matching OEM parts or using a better-fitting aftermarket plate.
Every quote includes the part, labor, cleanup, and a camera check of the smoke shelf and lower flue while we have the damper out. You get a written price before we start, and a written guarantee on the work when we finish. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, part of the Kingswell Guarantee that every Ashby Chimney location works under.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself with a flashlight and a little patience. Look up into the firebox throat and see if the plate is visibly cracked, rusted through, or hanging crooked. Check whether the chain or lever moves freely when the damper is cold. You can also run your hand around the frame (with gloves on) to feel for gaps where the plate should be seating.
What we don’t recommend is trying to remove or replace a cast iron damper plate on your own. Plates weigh between 15 and 35 pounds. They drop hard when the hinge lets go. We’ve had more than one Austin homeowner call us mid-project after a plate landed on the firebrick and cracked it. If you’ve checked what you can check and something still seems wrong, call us at (254) 274-4486. We’ll give you a straight answer and a written price before any work happens.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, expect 15 to 25 years from a cast iron Olympia damper before rust or warping becomes a problem. Humidity is the killer here, not heat. Dampers in homes near Lady Bird Lake or in shaded neighborhoods like Hyde Park tend to corrode faster than those in drier parts of town.
Yes, often. If the issue is a broken chain, a stripped lever gear, or a worn hinge pin, those are parts we replace individually for $340 or less. If the cast iron plate itself is cracked or rusted through, the plate gets replaced. We’ll tell you which it is after inspecting the damper, and you’ll see the evidence before you’re asked to spend a dollar.
Most Olympia damper repairs take 60 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. We stock the common replacement parts on the truck, so if you’re in Mueller, Round Rock, Cedar Park, or anywhere else in the Austin metro, there’s a good chance we can finish the job in one visit.
Yes. We carry Olympia Chimney-compatible chains, hinge pins, lever gears, and damper plates, plus aftermarket options for older frames. We also stock parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco for related chimney and liner work. If we need a specific OEM plate for a newer model, we can typically have it within a few business days.
If your Olympia damper has given up, don’t wait until the first cold snap when every chimney company in Austin is booked out for weeks. Call us at (254) 274-4486 and we’ll schedule a time that works. As Nathan Corliss says: say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing.
