Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If your HeatShield chimney cap has cracked, rusted through, or blown off in a storm, we install HeatShield-compatible caps throughout Austin, TX, with most replacements running from $380 to $720 installed, depending on flue size and roof access. We keep common HeatShield cap sizes on the truck, so many installations happen the same day we come out. The usual way people discover this part has failed: water starts showing up in the firebox after a hard rain, or they hear a metallic rattle on windy nights and realize the cap is loose.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield caps are sized by the flue tile they sit over, not by a model number stamped on the chimney itself. The cap needs to match the outside dimensions of your clay or steel flue tile, and we measure that directly before recommending anything. A common compatibility gotcha in Austin: older homes in neighborhoods like Crestview and Allandale often have flue tiles that run slightly oversized for their fireplace opening, so a cap ordered off a big-box shelf for “standard” masonry chimneys may not seat correctly. The outside mount style is what we install most often on HeatShield systems, because it allows full draft while keeping rain out. HeatShield also makes a top-mount cap that pairs with their resurfacing system – if your chimney was relined with HeatShield cerfractory material, the cap typically needs to anchor to that new surface, and that’s a different installation than a simple flue-tile cap. As an independent chimney company, Ashby Chimney Austin is not affiliated with HeatShield, but we install their caps regularly and stock the hardware to make them fit right.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. This is the most common symptom we see in Austin. The cap’s hood has rusted through or the screen mesh has torn, letting rain drop straight down the flue.
- Rust streaks on the chimney crown. When a galvanized cap starts to fail, rust bleeds down onto the masonry. It’s cosmetic at first, but it tells you the metal is losing its protective coating.
- Loose or rattling cap in wind. Austin’s spring storm season is rough on caps. If the cap shifts or bangs against the flue tile, the anchor bolts or the cap base have loosened, and a strong gust can send it off the roof entirely.
- Birds or squirrels getting into the chimney. The screen mesh on a HeatShield cap keeps animals out. When the mesh tears or pulls away from the frame, critters get in, and that’s a mess nobody wants to clean up twice.
- Downdrafts or smoke backing into the house. A cap that’s partially collapsed or clogged with creosote will change the draft. If the fireplace worked fine last winter and now smokes, the cap is a prime suspect.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a HeatShield chimney cap installation typically runs $380 to $720. You’re paying for three things: the cap itself, the labor to get on the roof safely, and the materials to anchor it correctly. The price moves with flue size (a single 13×13 flue cap costs less than a multi-flue cap that spans two or three tiles), roof pitch, and whether we’re replacing a simple top-mount or a HeatShield system cap that requires matching to existing anchor points. Before any work starts, you get a written price from Nathan Corliss and the Ashby Chimney Austin crew, and the invoice matches that number when the job is done. Every cap installation carries our written guarantee: if the cap fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it covers parts and labor.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner who’s comfortable on a ladder can check a few things from the ground: look for visible rust, see if the cap is sitting level on the flue, and check for bird activity. What we don’t recommend is walking a roof in Austin’s summer heat to swap a cap yourself. Steep roofs, clay tile roofs common in older Central Austin neighborhoods, and second-story chimneys all turn a simple swap into a fall risk. You also need the cap anchored to the flue tile, not just resting on it – a cap that’s only sitting there becomes a projectile in the next thunderstorm. If you want the cap installed right, anchored properly, and guaranteed in writing, call us at (254) 274-4486.
FAQs
Most HeatShield caps last 10 to 15 years in Central Texas, but the intense UV exposure and spring hail in Austin can shorten that if the cap is a lighter-gauge metal. Galvanized caps fail faster than stainless; we typically recommend stainless for Austin homes because it holds up to our weather without rusting through in five years.
Small problems like a loose bolt or a bent screen can sometimes be fixed in place, but once the metal has rusted through or the base has warped, repair doesn’t make sense. We’ll tell you plainly whether a fix is worth it, and if it isn’t, we’ll show you the damage before recommending a replacement.
A standard single-flue cap swap takes about 45 minutes to an hour once we’re set up on the roof. Multi-flue caps or caps on steep rooflines take longer. We’ll give you a realistic arrival window when you book, and we show up in it.
We stock the most common HeatShield-compatible cap sizes on our trucks for immediate installation. For oversized flues, multi-flue configurations, or HeatShield system caps that need to match an existing anchor pattern, we may order the specific part, and we’ll tell you the timeline before you commit to anything. If you need a same-week install, call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll tell you what we have on hand.
