Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco-compatible flue liner sections, and a full replacement in Austin typically runs between $2,400 and $4,800 installed depending on flue height, access difficulty, and whether we’re swapping a single cracked section or relining the entire run. Most Gelco liner replacements we handle are discovered during an annual inspection, when the camera shows hairline cracks that the naked eye can’t catch from the fireplace opening. If your chimney has a Gelco liner that’s failed, or a section that’s spalled and dropping clay chips into the smoke shelf, we can usually get it measured, quoted, and scheduled within the week.
The short version: Gelco makes a solid clay tile liner, but like every clay liner in Central Texas, it lives a hard life. Our summers and winters swing the masonry through 60- to 70-degree temperature cycles, year after year. Clay expands and contracts. Eventually it cracks. When it does, the fix is replacing the damaged section, and the question is whether the rest of the liner is worth keeping or if you’re better served going to a stainless system like DuraFlex or HeatShield, which we also install.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco has manufactured clay flue tiles for residential masonry chimneys for decades, and the liners show up under a handful of names depending on when the chimney was built. The most common we see in Austin homes are Gelco’s standard rectangular clay tiles in nominal sizes like 8×8, 8×12, 12×12, and 13×13, plus round tiles in 6-, 7-, and 8-inch diameters. If you’re trying to match a section, the size is stamped on the tile face, but after forty years of creosote and heat, that stamp is often illegible. We carry a flue tile gauge set to measure the opening precisely, which matters because a tile that’s off by half an inch won’t seat correctly in the mortar joint.
One compatibility gotcha we run into in Austin’s older neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Travis Heights: pre-1960s chimneys were frequently built with non-standard tile dimensions that Gelco’s current production doesn’t match exactly. In those cases we have two options. We can order a custom-fabricated equivalent through our supplier network, or we can recommend a stainless liner system sized to the actual flue dimensions. Stainless is often the better long-term answer, because it’s rated for the temperature swings clay struggles with and carries a longer manufacturer warranty. We’re an independent chimney company, not affiliated with Gelco, but we install their tiles and know their sizing conventions cold.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Clay chips or tile fragments in the firebox. This is the one symptom we tell people not to ignore. When a Gelco tile spalls, it’s shedding material that means the liner wall is thinning. Each chip is a warning the structural layer is on its way out.
- Visible cracks in the flue tile from the top. If you can see a crack down the first tile from the chimney crown, assume the ones below are in similar shape. Clay fails in patterns, not isolation.
- Flue gas smell in the house on windy days. A cracked liner lets combustion gases press into the chimney chase and work back through wall penetrations. This is a carbon monoxide risk, not just a smell problem.
- Rust streaks or moisture staining on the chimney breast inside the house. Cracked liners let flue condensation soak into the masonry, and that water eventually shows up indoors. By the time you see the stain, the liner crack has been passing moisture for a while.
- A fireplace that’s harder to light or won’t draw correctly. When clay liner sections shift or collapse partially, the flue’s cross-section changes and draft suffers. The fire smolders, smoke spills into the room, and the whole system works against you.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a single-section Gelco tile replacement runs roughly $450 to $900 when the damaged tile is accessible from the top, which covers removing the old tile, setting the new one in refractory mortar, and a camera inspection to confirm the repair. A full reline, where every tile from the smoke shelf to the crown comes out and new liner goes in, lands between $2,400 and $4,800. The spread depends on chimney height, roof pitch, access, and whether we’re doing scaffolding or can work safely from the roof. A two-story chimney on a steep pitch in Westlake is a different job than a single-story ranch in Crestview.
Every Gelco replacement we quote includes the parts, the labor, the scaffolding or roof access, cleanup of the old tile debris, and a post-job camera report showing exactly what we did and why. That camera report is yours to keep. We write the price before we start, and the invoice matches the quote. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair in writing; if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s not an add-on, it’s the default.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s an honest line here. You can safely inspect a Gelco liner from the top if you’re comfortable on your roof and the chimney is a single story. What you’re looking for: visible cracks in the first tile, spalling at the tile edges, and tile sections that have shifted out of alignment. Those are the easy calls. What you can’t safely do is drop a replacement tile down a 25-foot flue, seat it in mortar while hanging over the crown, and verify the mortar joints sealed without a camera. That’s a two-person job requiring flue tile gauges, refractory mortar mixed to spec, and the experience to know when a patch job will hold versus when the whole liner needs to come out.
Clay tile work at height is genuinely dangerous. The crown edges crumble, the roof is steep on a lot of Austin homes, and a tile that breaks mid-lift is a projectile. FAQs
In Central Texas, a Gelco clay liner typically lasts 25 to 40 years, with the lower end applying to chimneys used heavily each winter and exposed to full sun on the south side. The wildcard is water: any chimney without a proper crown cap and flashing will crack a clay liner early, because wet tile that freezes in a rare Austin cold snap fails fast.
A single short crack in an otherwise sound tile can sometimes be addressed with a refractory patch, but any repair that doesn’t restore the liner’s structural integrity is a temporary measure. If the camera shows multiple sections cracked, spalling, or shifted, replacing the liner is the honest fix. We’ll show you the camera video before we recommend anything.
Replacing a single accessible tile usually takes one day. A full reline runs two to three days, including setup, demolition, mortar cure time, and final camera verification. We give you a written arrival window before the crew comes out, and we leave the work area cleaner than we found it.
We stock common Gelco tile sizes on the truck, including 8×8, 8×12, 12×12, and round sizes. If your chimney takes an odd dimension, we order it and typically have it in hand within a week. We also stock stainless liners from DuraFlex and HeatShield for the cases where clay isn’t the right call anymore.
If your Gelco liner is showing cracks, chips, or you simply want a straight answer about what’s going on inside your chimney, call us at (254) 274-4486. We’ll name the price before we pick up a brush, and if we don’t think you need a new liner, we’ll tell you that too. Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing.
