Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Sweep in Austin: What to Know First
Gelco chimney sweep in Austin typically runs $189 – $329 for a standard open-flue fireplace, and most jobs are completed in about an hour. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, which means we don’t answer to a manufacturer’s sales script – we answer to what the camera and the brush actually show us. If you own a Gelco fireplace or stove, this page tells you what a sweep job looks like, what it costs, and what our crew has learned about how Gelco units fail in Central Texas. Call (254) 274-4486 for a written price before any work starts.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco’s fireplace lines are built to a price point, not a punishment. That’s honest engineering, and most of them do exactly what the box promises. But after a decade of opening Gelco fireboxes across Austin, plus the surrounding Travis and Williamson County areas, we’ve learned where they wear. Here’s what we see when a Gelco owner calls us out:
- Gelco gas log sets (the “Calhoun” and “Waco” series) trap soot in the burner pan. The air-shutter arrangement on these units is tighter than most, and when an Austin house runs the heater and the fireplace in the same dry day, the dust coming through the shutter bakes into a crust. The result is lazy flame and a soot smudge up the glass. A sweep with the burner pulled and blown out solves it – but pulling the burner means resealing the gas line, which we do.
- Gelco direct-vent units collect creosote in the offset elbow. The “Brentwood” and “Savannah” models route the flue at a 45-degree angle through the wall behind the finish, and that bend is a creosote shelf. Homeowners who run the unit on low flame all winter see the buildup at the crown of the elbow. We clean the run in sections rather than in one pass, because pushing debris down the flue just packs it into the elbow.
- Gelco masonry boxes with refractory panels crack at the corners. The “Laredo” series uses a cast refractory panel that’s thinner at the edges than the field. Austin’s freeze cycle – nights at 28, afternoons at 62 – works that thin edge until it spalls. A sweep that doesn’t pull the panels and look will miss it. We replace panels with either a Gelco panel if it’s still stocked, or a HeatShield panel trimmed to fit, which usually outlasts the original by a year or two.
- Gelco chimneys with a steel flue liner rust at the cap and the first joint. The lock-ring design on the “Georgetown” series lets rain water condense on the inside of the ring, and over five or six seasons that rust drips down the flue as orange streaks. We wire-brush the joint, treat it with a rust converter, and then seal it – but we only do this if the steel has at least .030″ of thickness left. Thinner than that and we tell you to replace it, with a camera photo you can keep.
- Gelco prefab units with a chase top cap collect debris under the cap rim. The cap is bolted at 12 points around the chase, which leaves a wide rim for leaves, wasps, and branch litter to wedge under. That’s a common Austin problem in any neighborhood with mature oaks – Bryker Woods and Hyde Park come to mind. We take the cap off, clean the rim, and check the spark screen while we’re up there. The cap goes back on with fresh sealant, not the cracked original.

Our Gelco Chimney Sweep Process
Every Gelco job starts with a phone call to (254) 274-4486. You get a live person, and you get a written price before the visit. When the technician arrives, here’s what they do:
- 1
Look at the unit first. We check the gel or gas log set, the glass, the hearth, and the area around the base. We want to know if the fireplace has been used since the last sweep, and whether there’s any smell, soot smear, or odd flame pattern you’ve noticed.
- 2
Run a scope. We don’t guess at what’s inside the flue. The camera goes up first, before the brush, so we can see the liner, the joints, and any buildup that needs attention.
- 3
Sweep in sections. We break the flue into sections and clean from the top down with a poly or wire brush sized to the flue, not a one-size-fits-all head. On Gelco direct-vent units we clean the elbow separately, because that’s where the creosote lives.
- 4
Pull and clean the burner or log assembly. For Gelco gas sets, we remove the logs, blow out the ports, and clean the pilot and thermocouple. The glass gets a specific ceramic-glass cleaner, not whatever’s in the truck.
- 5
Test and fire. We put the unit back together, light it, and watch the flame pattern for a few minutes. If the flame is yellow and lazy, we adjust the air shutter. If it’s blue and tight, we leave it alone.
- 6
Put it in writing. You get a written report of what we did, what we found, and what we recommend – with photos from the scope. The price we quoted before the job is the price on the invoice. If something needs a follow-up, the guarantee covers it.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Sweep Costs in Austin
Here’s what you can expect to pay for Gelco chimney work in the Austin area. These are the prices we quote before we arrive, not a bait number that doubles at the door.
- Standard Gelco open-flue sweep: $189 – $249, depending on the flue length and condition. Includes glass cleaning, log or burner dusting, and the inspection.
- Gelco direct-vent unit with elbow cleaning: $219 – $289. The elbow adds labor, and we don’t skip it – that’s where the creosote is.
- Gelco fireplace with glaze-level creosote (the crusty, shiny stuff): $299 – $379. We use a rotary loop or a chemical treatment for glaze, and it takes more time.
- Panel or refractory replacement: $180 – $340 for a typical Gelco fireplace with one or two cracked panels. The panel cost varies by model.
- Level 2 inspection (after a chimney fire, a reline, or a home sale): $349 – $499, depending on access. The camera and the report take time, and that’s the service that catches what a quick sweep misses.
What moves the price is the flue height, the type of buildup, and whether the unit needs a panel or a cap. We give you the price before we pick up a brush, and the invoice matches. Call (254) 274-4486 for an exact quote on your Gelco.
Why Austin Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Austin for Gelco Work
We’ve been sweeping and inspecting chimneys in Austin since 2002. We’re independent, which means we’re not trying to sell you a new Gelco – we’re trying to keep the one you have working. When a Gelco unit fails, we source an OEM part if the warranty covers it and the part is still stocked. When it’s not, we use a DuraFlex liner or a HeatShield panel as the replacement, and we tell you which one we used and why. Every repair carries a written guarantee. If it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s the same promise we’ve kept since Nathan Corliss started the crew here. Nathan says it better than we do: Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing. That’s how every Gelco job runs. If you’re in Tarrytown, Mueller, Barton Hills, or anywhere else around Austin, call (254) 274-4486 and you’ll talk to a live person – not a voicemail loop.
FAQs
No. A professional chimney sweep by an independent service provider does not void a Gelco warranty. In fact, Gelco’s own warranty language requires regular maintenance – a dirty or neglected unit is the number one reason a warranty claim gets denied. We don’t use chemicals or abrasives that would damage a Gelco unit; we clean to the manufacturer’s spec, not past it. If your warranty is still active, keep your sweep receipts. They’re actually your proof that you did the maintenance.
Once a year, and ideally at the end of burn season – March or April is fine, before the Austin heat and dust settle into the flue. If you burn your Gelco every night through the winter, or if you have a direct-vent unit with a long offset elbow, you may need a sweep every 18 to 24 months. We can tell you after one camera inspection. Call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll give you a written maintenance schedule for your specific unit.
We can diagnose it the same day. Most repairs, including panel replacement and cap resealing, are done same-visit because we keep common Gelco parts and aftermarket alternatives in the truck. If your unit needs a specific OEM part that’s on backorder, we’ll tell you the honest wait time and give you a price before we order anything. No repair ever starts without a written price and a written guarantee. Call (254) 274-4486 and tell us your Gelco model.
We’ll tell you the truth. If the flue liner is thick enough, the panels are intact, and the log set isn’t rusted through, you’re better off putting $200 into a sweep and $300 into a repair than $2,500 into a replacement. Gelco units that are maintained usually last 15 to 20 years before any real repair bill shows up. But if the liner has pitted through or the firebox has cracked deep enough to expose framing, we’ll show you the camera photos and explain the replacement cost. No scare tactics, just the facts. Call (254) 274-4486 for a Level 2 inspection and we’ll show you exactly what you have.
Yes. We work on DuraFlex liner systems and HeatShield components regularly, and we service all major fireplace and chimney brands. In fact, we install DuraFlex and HeatShield as repair upgrades on Gelco units all the time – they’re not competitors, they’re supplies. If your Gelco flue needs a new liner, we’ll quote you a DuraFlex liner and explain why it’s the right call. Call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll work out the details for your specific install.
