Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

This page is written for Austin homeowners who already have a DuraFlex liner – or are buying a home that has one – and need to know what’s actually going on inside that steel tube. DuraFlex is good equipment. It fails in predictable ways, and knowing those ways saves you money. Let’s get into it.

Key Takeaways

  • DuraFlex inspection in Austin costs $189 – $349 for Level 1 or Level 2; Level 3 runs higher when masonry damage is suspected.
  • DuraFlex liners fail most often at the tee connection, the top plate, and in the bottom 18 inches – not in the middle of the run.
  • We stock DuraFlex OEM components and trusted aftermarket equivalents, so a cracked tee doesn’t mean a full reline.
  • Every inspection includes camera footage you can watch with the tech. No recommendation without pictures you can see.
  • The Kingswell Guarantee covers every repair in writing. If it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge.

How DuraFlex Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

DuraFlex makes a solid product. The 316L alloy liners – the DuraFlex 316 and DuraFlex Pro lines – are workhorses in Austin fireplaces and furnace flues. But any liner that’s been in service for a decade in this climate has a story. Here’s what we actually see on DuraFlex inspection calls across Austin, from Tarrytown to Cedar Park, Round Rock to the Mueller neighborhood.

  • Corrosion at the tee connection. On DuraFlex Pro and DuraFlex 316 installations, the tee body where the liner meets the appliance is the first place condensation and acidic flue gases eat through. This is the single most common DuraFlex failure we find on inspection. The liner above it looks fine, the tee is swiss cheese. The fix is a new tee section – often a 2-hour job, not a reline. On camera, it looks like pinhole rust and a whitish crust. If you’re seeing that, the tee has maybe a season or two left.
  • Cracked top plate or failed storm collar. The top plate mounted at the flue opening handles all of Austin’s thermal cycling – 100-degree afternoons, 40-degree nights, plus the spring hailstorms. The plate’s silicone seal dries out and separates, then water runs down the outside of the liner and collects in the firebox. The liner itself is still good. We replace the plate, re-seal with high-temp silicone rated for this use, and the leak is done. On camera inspection, you’ll see water staining on the outside of the liner directly below the plate.
  • Kinked or non-smooth-wall sections on DuraFlex Al29-4C furnace liners. The Al29-4C line and the older DuraFlex SW smooth-wall liner are both used in Austin for gas furnace and boiler venting. When we find a kink or damage section on a furnace liner, it’s usually because the original installation didn’t use the proper 4-inch clearance or the liner got crushed during a roof project. The result is restricted draft and a carbon monoxide hazard. We cut out the bad section and splice in a new piece with the manufacturer’s coupling system – it’s what the OEM parts are designed for.
  • Sagging liner sections on tall two-story chimneys. On DuraFlex installations over 30 feet, we see liner sag where the insulation wrap has pulled away or the support brackets were never installed. The liner bunches up, and the corrugations catch creosote faster. On a camera inspection, this looks like a “washboard” pattern in the lower third of the run. We re-support the liner with proper standoff brackets and often recommend a Level 2 camera inspection after the fix to confirm the liner is sitting straight.
  • Punctures from mechanical sweeping. Here’s an uncomfortable truth. A previous sweep company used a steel wire brush on a DuraFlex liner, and the brush tip caught a corrugation and gouged it. We see this on at least one of every eight inspections we do on older DuraFlex installs. The gouge becomes a creosote catch point and a hot spot. The repair is a welded patch or a section replacement, depending on the size. We use poly brushes on DuraFlex liners, and if someone tells you a wire brush is fine on 316L, find a different sweep.

Our DuraFlex Chimney Inspection Process

Here’s what happens when you call us for a DuraFlex inspection in Austin. We start with the phone, and a person answers it. Nathan Corliss has been running chimney crews in Central Texas for well over a decade, and the first thing he’ll tell you is the price for the inspection you need. No showing up and “discovering” an extra hundred dollars once we’re on the roof.

  1. 1
Book the visit. You tell us what’s going on – a water leak, a smell, a real estate transaction, or just annual maintenance. We quote the inspection price over the phone and confirm a window. We show up in that window.
  2. 2
Level 1 walk-through. We inspect the accessible portions of the chimney, the firebox, the damper, the cap, and the visible liner from both the top and bottom. Written notes on everything.
  3. 3
Camera inspection of the liner. This is the step most people need. We run a camera down the full length of the DuraFlex liner and show you the footage on a screen. You’ll see exactly what we see. If the liner is clean and intact, we tell you that and show you the proof. No invented problems.
  4. 4
Parts decision. If there’s an issue – a cracked tee, a failed top plate, a punctured section – we walk you through the options. OEM DuraFlex part with the manufacturer’s warranty, or a quality aftermarket equivalent when it’s available and safe. We show you the price difference and make a recommendation, not a hard sell.
  5. 5
Written quote and repair. Before anything gets repaired, you get a written price. If you approve, we make the repair with the proper parts, run a second camera check to confirm the fix, and leave the work area cleaner than we found it.
  6. 6
Guarantee in writing. Every repair gets a written Kingswell Guarantee. If that repair fails inside the guarantee window, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it applies to every DuraFlex repair we make.

What DuraFlex Chimney Inspection Costs in Austin

Here’s the price posture, in plain dollars, because that’s how we operate. A Level 1 DuraFlex inspection in Austin runs $189 – $249. A Level 2 inspection – the one with the full camera run, which is what we recommend for most DuraFlex owners and for any real estate transaction – runs $299 – $349. A Level 3 inspection, where we’re opening up masonry to look behind walls, starts around $500 and goes up based on access, and we only recommend it when we have a specific reason to suspect hidden damage.

Common DuraFlex repairs fall into a predictable range. A replacement tee section: $275 – $450 installed. A new top plate and storm collar: $325 – $550. A welded patch on a small puncture: $200 – $400. A full DuraFlex reline of a typical one-story Austin chimney: $1,800 – $3,200, depending on liner length and the condition of the existing flue. HeatShield or Gelco resurfacing can be a lower-cost alternative in some situations, and we’ll tell you honestly which makes sense. Every quote is written. The number on the invoice matches the number we quoted. Call (254) 274-4486 for a free estimate.

Why Austin Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Austin for DuraFlex Work

Ashby carries ash right in the name – fitting for the people whose job is to clean it out. We’ve been doing this since 2002. This location is independently owned and operated under the Kingswell Guarantee, which means we live by the five Kingswell Way rules: say the price, show up in the window, leave it cleaner, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails. Austin homeowners who’ve been burned by no-shows and price-switching contractors tend to appreciate a company that owns its word.

Our techs are background-checked and uniformed. They know DuraFlex liners inside and out because they see them every week in Austin homes. And when a DuraFlex repair isn’t the right call – when a HeatShield resurfacing or a Gelco sealant system makes more sense for the budget and the condition – we’ll tell you that too. We’re not married to one brand. We’re married to fixing the flue correctly. The Kingswell Guarantee covers every repair we make, and if something we fixed fails inside the guarantee period, the second visit is free.

Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing.
