Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We install Copperfield chimney caps in Austin for $385 – $680, and we keep the most common cap sizes on the truck so a swap usually happens in one visit. A properly installed Copperfield cap should give you 12 to 18 years here, but Austin’s oak pollen, cedar droppings, and those March hail bursts can cut that short. Most homeowners call us after spotting rust streaks on the crown, hearing something rattling in the flue when the wind shifts, or finding a line of water staining the firebox after a hard rain.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield’s caps for masonry chimneys come in two families: the Top-Mount series (square or rectangular bases that bolt to the crown) and the Slip-In series (round bases that seat inside a round flue tile). The fit has to match the flue, not just the house. A 13″x13″ crown cap does not seat well on a 12″x12″ flue, and forcing it is how you chip the crown. Look at the tag: Copperfield stamps the model number on the underside of the base plate on every current-production cap. If the tag is gone, measure the outside width of the flue tile at its widest point, and add 1-5/8″ to get the crown cover size.
We carry the Copperfield Top-Mount line in standard sizes and can order the Slip-In series or custom bases when the flue is an oddball. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Famco when a Copperfield original is backordered or if you’re trying to stay under a certain budget. If you’re not sure what you have, call and we’ll walk you through measuring it while you’re standing at the flue. It takes about three minutes. Ashby Chimney Austin is an independent service provider, not a Copperfield dealer, so we order from the same trade distributors the dealers use and pass the wholesale pricing along.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust at the base plate or screen welds. Copperfield caps are powder-coated steel, not solid copper, and once the coating scratches or chips (hail, tree limbs, a branch dropped from a squirrel), water gets under the finish. Rust spreads fast in Austin’s humidity. This is usually the first visible sign.
- Water stains on the firebox floor or damper. The cap’s whole job is keeping rain out of the flue. If water is making it past, the cap is either sized wrong, seated loose, or the screen holes are worn wide from corrosion.
- Warped or bent screen mesh. Birds, raccoons, or tree limbs press against the mesh and distort it. A distorted screen is an open doorway for sparks and embers, which matters more here in October than most people realize.
- Whistling or rattling when the wind blows. A loose cap or a broken base bolt lets the metal move. You hear it inside, especially on north-facing rooms during a Blue Norther. It’s annoying, and it also means movement, which widens bolt holes and loosens the seal.
- Animal noise from inside the chimney. A cap with a broken screen or a missing base bolt is how a starling or a chimney swift gets in. You’ll hear it scratching at dawn. If that happens, don’t smoke them out; call us and we’ll remove the nest and replace the cap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a Copperfield chimney cap installation runs $385 to $680 for most masonry chimneys. That’s the written price we give before work starts, and it covers the cap, the mounting hardware, and the labor to remove the old cap, clean the crown surface, re-seat everything, and verify the fit. The range exists because cap sizes vary: a small 8″ round slip-in sits around $385 – $430 installed, while a large custom-rectangle Top-Mount with a tall screen for a dual-flue chimney lands on the higher end.
Here’s a breakdown we share openly:
- Cap and hardware: $140 – $310 depending on size and screen opening
- Labor and installation, including old cap removal and crown clean-up: $245 – $370
- Sealant and touch-up: included
- Written guarantee on the install: included
If the cap ever fails inside the guarantee window, we come back and fix or replace it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s written on the invoice, not promised verbally and forgotten.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a chimney cap means working at height on a sloped or flat roof, and the force of tightening a base bolt while leaning over the crown is enough to knock a ladder out from under you. We don’t recommend doing this one off a Saturday afternoon YouTube video, especially on a two-story Austin bungalow with a 7/12 roof pitch. You can safely check the cap from the ground with binoculars: look for rust lines, bent mesh, and any gap between the base plate and the crown. That tells you if it needs attention. Then call us. We bring the right cap, we’re comfortable on the roof, and the price is the price before we start. Call (254) 274-4486 and ask for a chimney cap quote; we’ll have a real person on the line.
FAQs
A copperfield cap installed correctly in Austin typically lasts 12 to 18 years. Hail, oak pollen acid, and cedar droppings accelerate wear, and a cap under tree cover often fails four to six years sooner than one in full sun. If you see rust streaks, schedule an inspection; it may have years left, or it may be ready to swap. Call us at (254) 274-4486 and we’ll tell you honestly which.
A small rust spot on the screen edge can sometimes be patched, but once rust reaches the base plate or a weld, repair rarely buys you more than a season or two. The material is thin enough that chasing rust is bad money. We’ll show you photo evidence of the cap’s condition before recommending anything, and we only suggest replacement when it’s the cheaper move over two years. A free estimate is a phone call away at (254) 274-4486.
Most Copperfield cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes once the tech is on the roof. That includes removing the old cap, inspecting the crown and top flue tile, cleaning the seating surface, and setting the new cap in place. You know the total price before the work begins, and the invoice matches that number.
We keep the common Top-Mount and Slip-In sizes in our Austin trucks, along with bases from Olympia Chimney and Famco when an equivalent is needed. Odd-size flues usually require a three-to-five-day order. We’ll tell you which applies to your chimney before you’ve committed to anything.
Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing.
