Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Copperfield damper repair in Austin typically runs $140 to $360 for a complete replacement, including the part and labor, and most jobs are finished in about an hour once we’re on site. We carry Copperfield-compatible replacement dampers on our trucks, so we can usually handle the fix in a single visit. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a living room that smells like last night’s fire, a draft that won’t quit, or a damper handle that spins freely without catching. If any of that sounds familiar, here’s the straight story on what’s wrong and what it costs to make it right.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes two damper styles you’ll find in Austin fireplaces. The older style is a cast-iron throat damper, usually a 6-inch or 8-inch flat plate that pivots on a rod above the firebox. The newer style is a top-sealing damper, which sits at the flue opening at the top of the chimney and opens and closes with a cable that runs down into the firebox. Both fail, but they fail differently, and the parts aren’t interchangeable. The quickest way to ID yours is to look up into the firebox from below: if you see a flat metal plate just above the opening, you’ve got a throat damper. If you see an open flue and a cable running up the wall, it’s likely a top-sealing damper.

Replacement dampers need to match your flue dimensions, not just the brand. We measure the flue liner opening before ordering or pulling a part, because a 13×13 flue is common in older North Austin and Hyde Park homes, while newer builds in Circle C or Steiner Ranch often run 13×18. Copperfield specifies fit ranges for each damper size, and getting that measurement wrong means a damper that binds, leaks smoke, or won’t seal. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for Copperfield specifically, the genuine part is often worth the extra $30 to $60. The cable hardware and pivot tolerances are tighter on the OEM pieces, and aftermarket universal dampers need more fitting work that can eat up whatever you saved on the part.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle spins without resistance. The most common failure on Copperfield throat dampers is the pivot rod stripping out of the damper plate. The handle turns, but the plate doesn’t move. That’s a damper replacement, not a lube job.
  • Cold air pours in when the fireplace isn’t running. A damper that won’t fully seat – even by a quarter inch – lets conditioned air escape straight up the flue. In Austin, that’s your AC fighting an open chimney in August. Top-sealing dampers usually develop this from a warped or rusted plate after years of Texas rain and sun exposure.
  • Smoke backs up into the room on startup. A damper that won’t open fully – often from creosote buildup around the pivot points or a cable that’s frayed and catching – forces smoke into the house instead of up the flue. We see this a lot on Copperfield dampers in older Allandale and Brentwood fireplaces that get heavy winter use.
  • The cable pulls but nothing happens, or the cable is snapped. Top-sealing dampers depend on a stainless cable running from a bracket in the firebox to the damper at the flue top. That cable corrodes, especially in Austin’s humidity, and once it snaps or the bracket pulls loose, the damper is stuck wherever it was.
  • A persistent fire smell, even days after the last burn. This usually means the damper is closed but not sealing. Creosote residue heats up in the flue and off-gasses back into the house. It’s not a fire hazard by itself, but it’s a sign the seal surface has deteriorated.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Austin, expect to pay:

  • Cast-iron throat damper replacement: $140 – $260 installed
  • Copperfield top-sealing damper replacement: $230 – $360 installed
  • Cable or bracket repair only: $90 – $150 installed

The spread depends on two things: the flue size and whether we can access the damper mounting points without pulling the chimney cap. Top-sealing damper jobs on a two-story roof or a steep pitch in Tarrytown run toward the top of that range because the work happens at the flue opening, which means ladder time on the roof. Every quote is a written price before we start, and the number on the invoice matches the number we gave you at the door. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair for 365 days: if it fails, we come back and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s an honest split here. You can absolutely diagnose the problem yourself: check whether the handle catches, look for a snapped cable, shine a flashlight up the flue to see if the damper plate is visibly rusted or off its pivot. What you shouldn’t do is attempt the replacement yourself. Throat damper replacement often means working inside the firebox with a wrench at an awkward angle, and if the damper plate drops while you’re under it, it’s a heavy piece of cast iron headed for your face. Top-sealing damper work means getting on the roof with tools and doing the job at the flue opening, which is exactly where a fall happens. We’ve been doing this work in Austin for well over a decade, and the repair itself is quick for a crew that does it weekly. If you’ve diagnosed the problem and want it fixed right the first time, call us at (254) 274-4486 and we’ll get you a written quote.
