Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We stock Gelco-compatible damper parts on our trucks and can repair or replace a failed Gelco damper in most Austin homes for $245 – $485 installed, depending on the model and what actually broke. Most damper repairs are done the same day. You usually find out your Gelco damper has failed one of two ways: you feel a cold draft pouring down the chimney in January, or you smell last night’s fire in the living room the next morning. Both mean the damper isn’t sealing the way it should.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco dampers show up in Austin fireplaces in three main configurations: the top-sealing designs that mount at the chimney crown, the throat-mount cast-iron style that sits just above the firebox, and the cable-operated series where a handle in the firebox pulls a cable up thirty feet of flue. Each one fails differently, and the replacement parts are not interchangeable between them, which is the first thing we check on a service call. If your Gelco has a rotary handle on the fireplace wall and a cable running up through the smoke chamber, you have the cable-operated series. If you can see a steel plate up at the top of the flue when you look up from below, that’s a top-sealing unit. The original Gelco part number is usually stamped on the damper frame itself, and if it’s not, we measure the flue opening to match it. A spec range that matters here: residential Gelco top-sealers in Austin homes typically fit flues from 9″×13″ up to 13″×13″, and a 9×13 unit will not seal a 13×13 flue properly no matter how well it’s installed. We use OEM Gelco parts when the frame is still in good shape and only the seal, cable, or handle assembly failed. When the mounting frame itself is rusted through or warped, we’ll often go with a quality aftermarket equivalent from our suppliers, because the aftermarket top-sealing dampers now use a better silicone rubber gasket than what Gelco shipped fifteen years ago. We’re not affiliated with Gelco. We’re an independent Austin chimney company that stocks their parts because they’re common in this market.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Cold air pouring down the flue when the damper is “closed.” The silicone or rubber gasket on a top-sealing damper loses its flex over time, especially after enough Austin summers baking at 100°F on a black chimney cap. Once the gasket hardens, it no longer seals against the damper frame, and outside air comes straight down the flue.
  • Damper handle spins freely with no resistance. On cable-operated Gelco units, this almost always means the cable snapped somewhere inside the flue or the spring-loaded return on the damper plate gave out. We see cable failures most often in chimneys that haven’t been swept in a while, because soot and creosote build up and bind the cable until friction wins.
  • Rust flakes falling into the firebox. The damper plate and frame on Gelco throat-mount dampers are cast iron, and when a chimney cap is missing or the flue isn’t properly waterproofed, Central Texas thunderstorms work down the flue and rust starts. If you’re seeing rust flakes, the plate is deteriorating and will eventually seize or crack.
  • Wood smoke drifting back into the room during a fire. If the damper won’t open fully because the cable is stretched or the plate is warped, smoke has nowhere to go and backs up into the living space. This is a safety issue every time, not a comfort issue.
  • The damper was fine last season and hard to close this season. Seasonal swelling of the masonry around the firebox, especially in Austin’s clay-heavy soil, can shift the damper frame just enough to bind the plate. We see this pattern in older homes in Hyde Park and Brentwood where foundation movement is common.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the straight answer for Austin: a Gelco damper repair or replacement typically runs $245 – $485 installed. The low end covers a cable replacement or gasket replacement on an existing top-sealing unit where the frame is still sound. The high end covers a full damper replacement where we remove the old unit and install a new top-sealing damper with a new cap assembly. What drives the difference: whether it’s a cable-operated unit replacement that requires working from the roof, the size of the flue, and whether we need to do any masonry patching around the mounting frame. You get a written price before we touch anything, and the number on that quote is the number on the invoice. No add-ons at the door. The repair is covered by our written guarantee, and if it fails inside the guarantee window, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s included on every damper repair we do. Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things yourself without a ladder: operate the handle and feel for resistance, look up from inside the firebox with a flashlight, and note whether the damper plate is fully open or fully closed. What I’d strongly discourage is any attempt to repair a cable-operated Gelco damper from the roof. The cable runs through a flue that may have creosote buildup, and the damper plate itself is under spring tension. A spring-loaded damper plate that releases while your hand is in the way will do what any high-tension steel part does. It’s not worth it. If your damper is a top-sealing unit, the gasket replacement requires working at the crown of the chimney, which is roof work with genuine fall risk. For top-sealing and cable-operated Gelco dampers, call (254) 274-4486 and let us handle it. For a simple throat damper that’s just sticky, a sweep and inspection might be all it needs, and we’ll tell you that plainly if that’s the case. Nathan Corliss has been looking at Austin chimneys long enough to know the difference between a damper that needs parts and one that needs a cleaning.
