Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney caps across Austin, with most Gelco cap installations running between $185 and $420 depending on the cap model and whether we’re rebuilding the flue crown at the same time. Most Gelco cap installations are completed in one visit, and we carry the common Gelco sizes on the truck so there’s no second trip while we order parts. Homeowners usually find us because their existing cap is rusted through, a storm knocked it loose, or birds have turned the flue into a nest site and they can hear them from the living room.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes caps for a few distinct applications, and the compatibility question starts before the cap ever goes on. The two most common lines we work with in Austin are the Gelco standard single-flue caps and their multi-flue models designed for oversized masonry chimneys. What trips people up is that Gelco caps mount differently depending on the flue type. If you have a round clay flue liner, the cap typically slides over the outside and secures with set screws or Tapcon anchors into the tile. If you have a square or rectangular flue, the cap often uses a pressure-fit bracket system instead. A cap built for one won’t seat correctly on the other, and forcing it means either a rattling cap or cracked flue tile. The surest way to identify what you have is to look at the top of the flue with binoculars before calling, or check the original cap for a stamped model number, which Gelco usually puts on the underside of the skirt. If there’s no stamp, we match by measuring the outside flue dimensions. For 90% of Austin homes built after 1980, that’s a standard 13 inch round flue, which is what we stock most. If you’re unsure whether you have a square or round opening, call while you’re in the yard and we’ll walk you through what to look for. It takes two minutes.
One honest note that benefits you more than us: Gelco makes OEM caps that are worth buying. They’re galvanized or stainless steel with good welded seams, and they hold up in Austin’s sun better than cheap hardware-store knockoffs that rust through in two seasons. We are an independent chimney service in Austin, not affiliated with Gelco, but we install their caps because they’re simply made better. If you’re looking at aftermarket alternatives, the equivalent products we’d point you toward are from Copperfield or Olympia, which we also stock.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust staining streaks down the masonry below the cap. This means the cap’s galvanized coating has failed and the steel is now shedding oxidized metal. Once this starts, the cap might still cover the flue, but its lifespan is measured in months, not years. We see this often in Austin because the humidity alternates with long dry stretches, which accelerates rust once the coating cracks.
- The cap is loose, shifted, or sitting off-center. Wind and thermal expansion work the set screws free over time. A shifted cap can lean against the flue liner and chip it, or lift entirely in a good thunderstorm and end up in the neighbor’s yard.
- Bird noise, twigs, or nesting material visible under the cap edge. A cap that’s shifted or the wrong size lets birds and squirrels into the flue. This isn’t just nuisance. Nest debris against a hot flue can ignite.
- Water dripping into the fireplace or puddling in the firebox after rain. The cap’s job is to keep water out of the flue. If water is getting in, either the cap’s lid was sized wrong, the seal is gone, or the flue crown itself has cracked open and the cap is doing half the job it should.
- Visible gaps between the cap skirt and the flue liner. This is the one we see after rush jobs. If the cap was installed with the wrong diameter bracket and shimmed to make it sort of fit, you’ll have a cap that catches rain from one angle but lets it blow in from another. The fix is a proper-size cap, not more caulk.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For an Austin homeowner, a Gelco chimney cap installation typically lands between $185 and $420. The cap itself is most of the spread. A 13 inch galvanized Gelco cap runs on the lower side of that range, while a larger stainless steel model for a big masonry flue sits at the top. The rest of the price is labor and hardware: mounting screws appropriate for the flue type, any sealing needed at the base, and the time to secure it properly rather than just drop it on and call it done.
What Ashley always includes in that price is the same thing Nathan Corliss built this business on: a written price before any work starts, a written guarantee on the installation, and no upsell come-on for a “camera inspection” that’s really just a sales pitch. If we recommend rebuilding the flue crown alongside the cap – which we only do when we can show you photos of the cracks – we’ll explain why, hand you the number, and let you decide. Nothing is recommended that you can’t see with your own eyes.
And because we know you’ve probably had a contractor go silent after a repair: our 365-Day Done Right Promise means if the cap installation fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s a written guarantee on a piece of paper, not a handshake.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and just checking what you’ve got, you can safely measure your flue from the ground or from a step ladder with binoculars. That helps us prep the right part before we arrive. Where we tell homeowners not to DIY is anything that puts you on the roof. A chimney cap installation means working at the highest, most awkward point of the house, often on a sloped or shingled surface, while leaning over an 8 or 10 foot flue. None of that is worth a fall to save $175. We carry harness and roof anchors for a reason. If you do go up, check the flue size, send us a photo, and call (254) 274-4486. We’ll show up with the right cap and do it in thirty minutes. You don’t have to prove anything to us by doing it yourself.
FAQs
A galvanized Gelco cap in Central Texas generally lasts 8 to 12 years before the sun and humidity start to break the coating down. Stainless steel versions usually go 15 years or more. The reason Austin wears caps out faster than other climates is the combination of intense UV and hard storms – the lid coating cooks in summer, then gets pounded with rain and humidity, and the repeated expansion and contraction opens micro-cracks that let rust start. If your home is under oak or pecan trees, check the cap more often; leaf litter and bird debris hold moisture against the steel and shorten the lifespan. If you’re not sure what’s on your roof right now, call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll tell you your cap’s age honestly after one look.
Sometimes, but usually not for less than a new cap costs. If the damage is a broken rivet or a loose bracket, we’ll tighten and patch it and you’ll get a few more years out of it. If the skirt is rusted through or the lid has corroded to the point of holes, the steel is done and you’re better off replacing. The honest answer when we see rust-through is that a repair would cost as much in labor as a replacement, and it would fail sooner. We’ll always give you the number before you have to choose.
Most installations run 30 to 60 minutes once we’re on the roof. If it’s a simple swap on a round flue, you’re looking at half an hour. If it’s a multi-flue cap or we’re replacing a damaged flue crown as part of the job, it can take a couple of hours. We give you the arrival window when you book and the written price before we put boots on the roof.
We stock the common Gelco sizes on the truck – standard round flue caps in the 13 inch range are with us daily. For unusual sizes, oversized multi-flue caps, or custom stainless work, we order from our supplier and install within a few days. When you call, we’ll get the flue measurement and tell you upfront whether it’s a same-visit job or a two-visit job. No one shows up and surprises you with a parts delay.
