Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

If you own a Gelco gas fireplace, a Gelco wood-burning unit, or a Gelco insert that’s acting up, this page is for you. Nathan Corliss and our crew at Ashby Chimney Austin have been pulling apart Gelco fireplaces in homes from Hyde Park to Circle C for years. We know what breaks, why it breaks in this climate, and what it takes to fix it right. Call (254) 274-4486 and a live person answers, any hour.

How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Gelco made a lot of fireplaces in the 1990s and 2000s, and plenty of them still heat Austin living rooms. Here’s what we actually find when they stop working.

  • Pilot light won’t stay lit on Gelco vented gas logs. This is the most common Gelco call we get in Austin. The thermocouple – that thin metal rod the pilot flame heats – wears out and stops sending the millivolt signal that holds the gas valve open. We replace it with a universal thermocouple rated for the same millivolt output, test the pilot assembly, and usually have heat back in under an hour.
  • Gas valve chatters or won’t open on older Gelco units. Gelco sourced valves from a handful of manufacturers over the years, and some of the early ones don’t age well in Austin’s humidity. A valve that clicks but won’t light often has a failing solenoid. We diagnose the valve before recommending replacement because sometimes the fault is upstream in the wall switch wiring.
  • Wood-burning Gelco fireplaces with warped dampers. Gelco’s wood-burning boxes were solid for their era, but the cast-iron dampers warp with repeated hot fires. A warped damper lets conditioned air escape up the flue all summer and drafts smoke into the room in winter. We replace the damper assembly or retrofit a top-sealing damper, which stops the air leak and keeps rain out.
  • Firebox panel cracks in Gelco factory-built units. The refractory panels inside Gelco fireboxes crack over time, especially with the heating and cooling cycles Austin homes put them through. Cracked panels aren’t always urgent, but left alone they let heat reach the metal shell. We replace panels with refractory material matched to the unit’s firebox dimensions.
  • Gelco gas inserts with clogged burner ports. Spider webs and dust love small gas orifices, and Austin’s seasonal changes push insects indoors. A Gelco insert that lights thin or uneven usually has debris in the burner ports. We pull the burner, clean the ports with the right brushes, and verify even flame before we leave.

Our Gelco Fireplace Repair Process

Here’s what a Gelco repair with us looks like from the first call to the final test.

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. No voicemail loop. We ask what the fireplace is doing, what model it is if you know, and help you decide if this is urgent or can wait a few days.
  2. 2
We arrive and run the diagnosis in front of you. Our technician checks the pilot, valve, wiring, and burners. We explain what we’re finding as we find it. You see the problem, not just our word for it.
  3. 3
We write the price down. Before any repair starts, you get a written quote for the exact work. If we recommend a part, we tell you whether it’s OEM Gelco stock or a quality aftermarket equivalent and what the difference means for you.
  4. 4
We do the repair. Most pilot, valve, damper, and panel jobs are finished in one visit. We carry common thermocouples, valves, gaskets, and refractory materials on the truck.
  5. 5
We test everything. We fire the unit, check flame quality, test for proper venting, and confirm the controls work. We don’t leave until the fireplace runs the way it should.
  6. 6
You get the guarantee in writing. Every repair includes a written guarantee. If it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

What Gelco Fireplace Repair Costs in Austin

Here’s what you should expect to pay for common Gelco repairs in the Austin market. These are honest ranges, not lowball teaser numbers.

  • Pilot assembly or thermocouple replacement: $180 to $320
  • Gas valve replacement: $280 to $520
  • Damper replacement or retrofit: $220 to $550
  • Firebox refractory panel replacement: $300 to $750 depending on panel size
  • Burner cleaning and adjustment: $120 to $200
  • Full diagnostic visit: $89, credited toward the repair if you proceed

What moves the price is parts availability, access to the unit, and whether the fireplace is vented, vent-free, or an insert. Gelco hasn’t made new fireplaces in years, so some OEM parts are scarce. When OEM isn’t available, we source aftermarket parts from suppliers we trust, and we’ll tell you before we install anything. Call (254) 274-4486 for a written estimate at your home. The estimate is free, and it doesn’t obligate you to anything.

Why Austin Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Austin for Gelco Work

Say the price first. Explain the work. Put the promise in writing. That’s the way Nathan Corliss runs every Gelco job, and it’s the reason homeowners who’ve been burned by no-shows and price-switching contractors call us instead.

We’ve been doing this since 2002, originally under the Kingswell network of independently owned chimney companies. That means every Ashby Chimney Austin job follows the Kingswell Guarantee: a written price before work starts, a written guarantee when it’s done, and a free second visit if a covered repair fails within the guarantee period. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and trained specifically on older fireplace systems like Gelco’s. And because we also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield components, we can handle liner upgrades or resurfacing at the same time as your fireplace repair if your chimney needs it. One crew, one visit, one written price for the whole job.
