Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock HeatShield-compatible crown repair materials on our trucks and install them across Austin for $350 to $850 depending on crown condition, accessibility, and how much prep the existing concrete needs. Most jobs are done in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover a crown problem the hard way: they spot a cracked or spalling crown during gutter cleaning, or water starts staining the ceiling near the chimney after a heavy Austin downpour. The crown is the concrete cap at the top of the chimney that sheds water away from the flue, and when it fails, water gets into the chase and the HeatShield liner system sits in moisture it was never meant to handle.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield is a cerfractory flue sealant system – a ceramic-based repair coating applied inside existing flue liners – and the crown repair we’re talking about here is the concrete work above it, not the HeatShield coating itself. The crown is the umbrella; HeatShield is what the umbrella protects. The compatibility question that matters is whether your existing crown can accept a resurfacing compound or needs a full recast. If the original crown is still structurally sound with surface spalling under a quarter inch deep, a HeatShield-compatible crown coat bonds and seals it. If the crown is crumbling, pitched toward the flue instead of away, or missing expansion gaps, we recast it. On the truck we carry HeatShield’s cerfractory repair materials alongside DuraFlex and Gelco equivalents. One thing to check before you call: if your chase top has a metal cover with a stamped manufacturer plate, that’s not a masonry crown at all – it’s a chase pan, and that’s a different repair. Ashby Chimney Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield, but we’ve installed their system and repaired the crowns above it for over a decade.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney flue. The crown’s whole job is to direct water away from the flue opening. A crack lets rain run straight down the outside of the HeatShield liner and into the chase or attic. In Austin, the freeze-thaw cycles through December and January make hairline cracks into open channels fast.
- Spalling or flaking concrete on the crown surface. This is the crown literally losing its outer layer. What looks like a cosmetic issue is the top of the chimney slowly dishing into a bowl that funnels water directly into the flue tile. We see this on crowns poured without the right mix, common on homes built in Austin’s 1980s and 1990s boom neighborhoods like Circle C and Anderson Mill.
- Efflorescence, the white chalky deposit on the brick below the crown. That stain isn’t random, it’s mineral salt carried out of the masonry by water that should have been shed by the crown. If you can wipe it off and it comes back after rain, the crown is the source.
- Visible cracks wider than a quarter inch, especially radiating from the flue opening. The clay flue tile expands at a different rate than the concrete crown around it, and without an expansion gap – a flexible joint between the two materials – the crown cracks in a star pattern. That’s a design flaw in the original crown, not just age.
- Rust stains on the crown or inside the chase top. The mortar wash over the flue often has metal reinforcing that’s now exposed to water. Once that steel rusts, it swells and cracks the surrounding concrete. This one’s more common on chimneys near Lady Bird Lake where humidity stays high year-round.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a HeatShield crown repair with resurfacing typically runs $350 to $550. A full crown recast runs $650 to $850. The range comes down to three things: how much of the old crown we have to remove, how large the crown footprint is, and whether the flue opening needs an expansion gap added – plenty of Austin chimneys never had one. Every quote includes the written price before any work starts, the HeatShield-compatible materials, labor, and a written guarantee on the repair under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the crown repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge. You’ll know the exact number before we pick up a trowel.
Key takeaways:
- $350 to $550 to resurface a sound crown; $650 to $850 to recast a failed one.
- Written price before work starts, written guarantee after it’s done.
- Free second visit if the repair fails inside the guarantee period.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the crown from the ground with binoculars or from a ladder if you’re comfortable on one. Look for the cracks and spalling we listed above. What we’d not recommend is climbing onto the roof to do the repair yourself. Crown work means being on the roof’s edge working with trowels and wet concrete, and the risk of a fall or a dropped tool through a skylight is real. We’ve repaired enough botched DIY crowns – usually with the wrong concrete mix that shrinks and cracks within the first Austin summer – to say this one’s worth getting right the first time. If you’re not sure whether you need a full recast or a surface repair, call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll tell you what you’re looking at. The estimate is free.
FAQs
Done correctly with the right mix and an expansion gap, a recast crown lasts 20 to 30 years in Austin’s climate; a resurfaced crown lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs attention again. Austin’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer heat are what age a crown, and both hit hardest on south-facing chimneys. Call (254) 274-4486 if you’re not sure which repair your crown needs.
Yes, if the structural concrete is intact and the damage is surface spalling or hairline cracking, a HeatShield-compatible resurfacing compound bonds to the existing crown and seals it. If the crown is actively crumbling or pitched toward the flue, resurfacing won’t hold, and recasting is the honest fix. We’ll show you which condition yours is in before any work is quoted.
A resurfacing job in Austin usually takes two to three hours on site. A full recast takes four to six hours depending on how much old crown material has to come out. We schedule a single visit, and the written price you get before we start is the number on the invoice when we finish.
Yes, we carry HeatShield-compatible crown coat and repair materials, plus DuraFlex and Gelco equivalents, so there’s no waiting on a supplier order if your crown needs work the same week we inspect it. Call (254) 274-4486 and we’ll confirm what your chimney needs.
If your HeatShield liner is still doing its job but the crown above it isn’t, that’s a repair worth scheduling before the next hard rain. Call (254) 274-4486 for a free estimate – we’ll say the price first, explain the work, and put the guarantee in writing. Nathan Corliss and our Austin crew have been at this since 2002, and we don’t mind telling you when a repair can wait. This one usually shouldn’t.
