Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in Austin typically runs between $325 and $680 installed, depending on which damper component failed and whether the flue liner needs attention at the same time. Our trucks carry DuraFlex-compatible damper plates, gaskets, cables, and housings, so most repairs happen in a single visit. You usually find out the damper failed the hard way: a fireplace that burns sluggish, a smoke smell backing into the room, or a “clunk” when you pull the lever and nothing moves up top.
What matters with DuraFlex is that the damper is matched to the liner system, not just slapped in from whatever’s on the shelf. Get that wrong and you’ll be back here in a season or two. We’ll explain below how to identify yours, what fails first, and what an honest fix costs in Austin.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes several damper configurations, and the repair path depends on which one you have. The most common in Austin homes is the top-mount damper, which sits at the crown of the chimney and seals at the top of the flue rather than right above the firebox. DuraFlex’s top-mount dampers are designed to pair with their 316L stainless steel flexible liner, so the damper collar and liner connection point matter when sourcing a replacement part.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha many homeowners miss: DuraFlex top-mount dampers come in flue-size-specific collars, typically matching liner diameters from 5.5 inches through 8 inches. An 8-inch damper will not seal properly on a 6-inch liner, no matter how much you fiddle with it. Before ordering anything, you need the measurement from inside edge to inside edge of the flue tile or liner at the top of the chimney. We do this with a camera during inspection, so you’re not guessing.
If you can’t find a model label, check the damper plate itself: DuraFlex stamps the size into the metal on most units made in the last decade. We also stock compatible aftermarket damper plates and cable assemblies that meet the same 316L stainless spec DuraFlex uses. We’re an independent Austin chimney company, not affiliated with DuraFlex corporate, but we’ve been installing and repairing their systems long enough to know which aftermarket parts hold up and which ones don’t. Nathan Corliss, our owner, has been hands-on with DuraFlex liners and dampers in Central Texas for well over a decade.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The damper cable feels loose or you can’t tell if it’s open or closed. The cable connects the lever or handle at the firebox to the damper plate at the top. Over years of heating and cooling, the cable stretches or the clamp at the plate end slips. You pull the lever and hear nothing, because the plate isn’t actually moving.
- Smoke backs into the room even with the damper open. A damper plate that’s stuck partially closed restricts the flue opening. That reduced draft sends smoke into the house instead of up the chimney. In Austin, this often shows up on warm winter days when draft is weaker anyway.
- You can hear wind or feel cold air dropping in when the fireplace isn’t in use. A top-mount damper’s whole job is sealing the flue when the fire is out. If the gasket has hardened or the plate has warped, outside air leaks down into the house year-round, raising your cooling bill through the summer.
- Rust flakes or moisture stains on the firebox floor after rain. Austin’s hard rainstorms find their way into an unsealed flue fast. If your DuraFlex top-mount damper isn’t closing fully, water comes down the liner and pools in the firebox. Over time that rusts the damper plate further and eventually damages the liner connection.
- The damper plate visibly sits crooked or won’t seat flush. Hail, thermal cycling, or a poor original install can shift the mounting bracket. A crooked plate won’t seal, which means the damper is functionally doing nothing, even if the cable moves fine.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a DuraFlex damper repair in Austin, expect to pay between $325 and $680 installed. The low end covers a cable or gasket replacement with the existing damper plate in good shape. The upper end covers a full top-mount damper replacement, including a new 316L stainless plate, new cable assembly, and resealing at the flue collar.
What drives the range is access. A single-story house with a walkable roof runs less than a two-story with a steep pitch in, say, the hills west of MoPac. Every quote is a written price before we touch the ladder, and the number you’re quoted is the number on the invoice. We don’t add surprise line items at the end. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price, show up in the window, leave it cleaner, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails.
The repair itself carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the damper we install fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge. Period.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: whether the cable moves at all, whether the handle at the firebox feels connected to anything, and whether the damper plate is visible and aligned from inside the firebox with a flashlight. That gives you useful information before you call.
What you should not do is climb onto a roof to inspect or replace a top-mount damper yourself. Austin roofs are steep, tile is common, and working at the top of a chimney while measuring and fitting metal is not the place to learn. Falls from roof height can be fatal, and the damage a dropped tool or misstep does to your roof or chimney cap can cost far more than the repair itself. We’ve also seen homeowners install the wrong damper size and unknowingly run the fireplace with a compromised seal, which is a carbon monoxide risk in a closed house.
If the damper is at the top of your chimney, let a trained tech do it. Call us at (254) 274-4486 and we’ll give you a straight answer about what’s actually wrong.
FAQs
A properly installed DuraFlex top-mount damper typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Austin’s climate. The stainless steel plate holds up well, but the gasket material and cable assembly degrade faster because of our heat and humidity swings plus the occasional hail season. If your damper is over a decade old and acting up, you’re likely due for component replacement rather than another patch job.
Most DuraFlex damper problems are repairable without replacing the entire unit. A stretched cable, worn gasket, or slipped clamp can be fixed with replacement parts in under an hour. We only recommend full damper replacement when the plate itself is warped or the mounting bracket has corroded to the point that it won’t hold alignment. We’ll show you what we see on camera and let you decide, armed with the actual evidence. Call us at (254) 274-4486 for an honest assessment.
Most DuraFlex damper repairs take 60 to 90 minutes from roof access to final seal check. Full damper replacements run closer to two hours when we’re also resealing the flue collar. We book a real arrival window, not an all-day “someone will be there between 8 and 5” situation.
We carry DuraFlex-compatible damper cables, gaskets, plates, and mounting hardware in common flue sizes on every truck. Uncommon sizes or specific configurations can usually be sourced from our Austin suppliers within a day or two. We also work with HeatShield and Gelco components when the liner needs attention alongside the damper, so we’re not making a second trip for a second problem.
If your DuraFlex damper is acting up, don’t wait until smoke is rolling back into your living room or rain is pooling in the firebox. Call us at (254) 274-4486 for a free estimate. We’ll look, measure, and quote it before any work starts, and we’ll stand behind it in writing.
